What
is "Lasallian Youth Ministry"?
Lasallian Youth Ministry offers opportunities
for young people to discover the fullness of life through innovative experiences of
faith, service and community. It aims at empowering
young people - either current or former students of
Lasallian schools - to use their gifts in the service
of others.
How long has it been in
existence?
In 1997 a decision was made to combine two important
ministries in the District of Australia, New Zealand
and PNG: Vocations Ministry and Youth Ministry. For
as long as can be remembered, the District has always
had a Brother in Vocations ministry who, predominantly,
has visited schools to simply invite men to, at least
consider the Brothers’ way of life as an option,
as well as running retreats and experiences for young people.
Youth
Ministry in our District has been active for a number
of years, dating back to the 1960’s with camps
for disadvantaged students offering volunteer experiences
to young people and providing opportunities for retreats
for young men and women. In the District of Australia,
New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, both of these ministries
have had a long and rich history.
Today, Lasallian Youth Ministry is led by both lay and religious with an ever-growing team of young people operating as Youth Ministers, and Lasallian Volunteers across the District.
What does Lasallian Youth Ministry do?
Organise and conduct a range of programs in schools
such as the Lasallian Youth Leaders model, leadership
seminars, social justice groups, retreats, prayer days
as well as recreation and fundraising activities. Young adults working in Lasallian Youth Ministry
organise youth camps, youth gatherings and social justice awareness days as well as opportunities to meet and share their experiences with other Lasallians. They also provide volunteer experiences
for young people through the Share the Mission, Balgo and PNG service projects.
