Created by John Francis, a teacher and aspiring De La Salle Brother, the newly created Lasallian Breakfast Club feeds up to 180 students three times a week. It is run by the Lasallian Youth Leaders who arrive two hours before class to assist in preparing and cooking a broth of meat and vegetables to serve the students. John has also been successful in getting sponsorship from a number of companies in Port Moresby to keep the initiative cost-free. What a great idea!
Eight Lasallian Youth Ministers are formally employed by the Trustees of the De La Salle Brothers across the District of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in 2009. A number of other Youth Ministers are employed by their own schools and maintain an association with the Lasallian Youth Ministry Team. The ‘Annual Lasallian Youth Ministers Workshop’ brought together the entire group for three full days of formation and training.
During June, the Lasallian Youth Ministry office was busy visiting a number of the volunteers commited to the 'Share the Mission' Program. Ben, David and John are working for 9 months in placements where the De La Salle Brothers could use an 'extra set of hands'. All are doing really well and making a positive impact on the communities they are involved with. It was also inspiring to see how the experience is changing thier individual perspectives on life. James Camden was lucky enough to accompany Ben (see right) on a school 'bush trip' with Kindergarten into the outback of Western Australia. For more info on the program see the Share the Mission page.
Lasallian Youth Ministry welcomes De La Salle College, Revesby to the LYL program in 2009. Congratulations to Lasallian Youth Ministers Josh Dwyer and James Limbrey who brought together the new recruits from Bankstown and Revesby for a dynamic day equipping them with skills for the work they will do with the young people of their schools this year.
Just when people thought that the number of Lasallian Youth Leaders at Oakhill College, Castle Hill couldn't grow any larger we were blown away!
In April 2009, 189 Year 11 students turned up during the first day of their Easter holidays to be trained by the Lasallian Youth Ministry Team.
This is over 60% of the form. Well done! We look forward to hearing how you're enhancing the values of faith, service and community in your school this year.
