Face-to-face or virtual? In this year of COVID, the ANZPPNG "Novices" (learning to be De La Salle Brothers), are dealing with it well.
Adan and Nabeel, the Pakistani young men taking up their spiritual year of "Novitiate", can' t travel to the Philippines where the De La Salle Region has its community study centre, so they are living at Gujranwala in the Brothers' community, outside of Lahore, Pakistan.
Joining Brothers Amir, Naqash, Christie and Peter who serve in the schools there, they are taking up, under Br. Peter Abraham, learning about the life of Pakistani Brothers and mission. They will use the technology of Google Classroom, Canvas On-line dashboard, Zoom (for interviews, webinars) and Flipgrid to access the units being explored in Lipa, in the Philippines. The topics are graduate-level and wide-ranging: different styles of prayer, including Lasallian, becoming the mature self (psycho-sexual development), relationships in community-living, the Lasallian Mission, basic theology and Gospel study, and the history and charism of the Institute.
Sadly, they will not be living with the other nine young men from all over Asia exploring a "vocation" to religious life. Living together builds community, Brothers believe, and allows one to teach one another, and to share personal dreams and ideals. It is also a place and time to treasure one's individuality and difference, and develop a personal relationship with God. Through modern IT, Nabeel and Adan will listen to conferences later or in real-time, talk and discuss with their peers, do assignments and submit them online, and get advice and tutoring from the three Brothers on the Lipa staff, especially the Director, Br. Rey, a Filipino. At home in Gujranwala, Pakistan, guidance and learning will be offered by Br. Peter and others, as they also engage with students and teachers in the local Lasallian schools.
It's all about being an explorer discovering more the mysteries of the Self, the world of learning, and the divine. Exciting times!
