"Touching Hearts" - the icing, or the cake?
'To touch hearts' is an expression De La Salle uses some 25 times in his writings. Many 21st century educators find it an attractive way of seeing their work and therefore, it is worth exploring and taking a closer look.
When we do that, we see that in itself 'to touch someone's heart' is neither good nor bad in itself.
The real meaning of the expression also depends on De La Salle's understanding of 'heart', which covers more ground than it does in our modern sense. And educationally, his understanding is much more significant.
We will explore together De La Salle's frequent use of 'touching hearts', and what he meant by it.
More importantly, we will shift the expression into the 21st century contexts of the young people we care for, and ask ourselves what this really means for our work with them.
