Francis Douglas Memorial College, New Plymouth - Head Boys welcoming speech 2019

Good morning everyone and welcome to you all. My name is Corban Dravitzki and I am your head boy, confident and servant for 2019. 2019 will be a new year full of experiences and learning. 2019 is a time for you to shine and strive for success.

The beginning of the year is an exciting time. You are hungry and eager to learn. Many of you have already begun to set goals and have expectations for yourself this year which is fantastic as we all need a mission. We all need something to strive for. If a man has no mission, then what is he supposed to do. He drifts through life. He goes through the motions and doesn't seem to achieve anything. Everyone needs to have a mission, a vision, a clarity and a hunger to achieve. (Proverbs) "Where there is no vision the people perish." Every single one of you is made for this mission. The mission of making it through the school year, having achieved your potential. You all have potential, the potential to learn the potential to lead and the potential to succeed in whatever you try and do. With the right determination, dedication and self-belief you can all achieve your own potential.

As pupils of this school, we must all engage in a shared mission. To become men of good character who influence the world positively. Men who respect others and who are respected by others. As the old saying goes "treat others as you wish to be treated." This year I encourage you to try to fit the criteria of a good college man. A man who lives out the implications of Catholic Social teaching. A man who puts others first. Father Francis Douglas and St John Baptist De La Salle are key examples of men who lived out their own lives according to Catholic Social teaching. These men continuously put others welfare first. They gave up what they had for the sake of others. "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves." When Jesus was asked which commandment was most important, he replied. "You shall love God with all your heart, all your mind and with all your soul." The second is this; "you shall love your neighbour as yourself." God wants us to be the best that we can be. He wants us to show love to all people as we love ourselves. This is what being a good college man is all about. Putting others first. Showing kindness to others is the greatest gift we can give. It is the ultimate thing for us to do and is the essence of Catholicism and our college.

If you are going to do something do it properly. No one ever achieved without hard work. Hard work is the number one key to success in every aspect. To inspire you must perspire. There are countless examples of people who have worked hard and achieved. Talent and natural attributes will take you so far because Hard work is the key to develop success further. The truth is "Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work."

Not only do you need hard work to succeed but hard work needs to be constant and sustained. It is far too easy to set goals and be hungry to succeed at first just to lose focus and sight of your goals. Remaining focused is perhaps the greatest challenge for many of us as we are surrounded by many of life's distractions and have many things to focus on. This aspect is the ultimate challenge of success. You need to have the grit and determination to chase your dreams with such diligence that you are able to catch them.

However, we must allow ourselves the ability to fail. Sometimes things do not go to plan. We all have had moments in our life where the plan does not come together. Unfortunately, that is just how it rolls. No matter how much we put in, what we get out doesn't seem to coincide. That's life. We just have to accept that. Learning from failures turns setbacks into experiences which help you to be better next time around, is what learning and growing up is all about. Sometimes, to reach your goals, you have to sacrifice other aspects of your life, this can seem tedious and challenging at times, but the rewards will outweigh all when the curtain falls.

Some of you will be the sporting elite, some of you will be the academics, some of you will excel in the arts, but all of you are gifted. God has given each one of you something special. You can be sure that your parents, teachers and this leadership team want to see your gifts boil to the surface, see them prosper, see them transform, and see you become the man you are destined to be.

Finally, I cannot stress this point enough. We are all boys together, Brothers! Mates! Yes some of us will make mistakes, but we need to remember to always look out for one another and have the courage to help others when they need it most. You never know when you may require the help of a good friend.

In 2019 I want you to strive to become the man you are destined to be, I want you to be a good college man, I want you to strive to reach your potential. I want you to be who you are and share your gifts with the world.
