The Social Justice Committee of the Conference of Leaders of Religious Institutes of NSW (CLRI) has released a new Carbon Fast calendar for religious congregations during Lent.
The calendar provides practical daily suggestions to combat climate change, such as reducing the use of plastic bags, having more meat free days and growing ones own vegetables.
The Executive Director of the CLRI, Sr Sharon Price rsm says the calendar ties in closely with Pope Francis' strong calls for environmental responsibility.
"The Pope has implored us to prepare for Easter by practicing the works of mercy", Sr Sharon explains.
"The calendar will act as our guide to spreading mercy to both people and the planet in order to protect and preserve God's creation".
