Mission Action day was held last Friday at St Michael's College. The weather was amazing and it was a great day for all involved.
Steeped in history, Mission Action Day began in the 1960's, as a walk-a-thon along the local beaches, from Henley to Semaphore and back. Today, MAD has grown to include not only the beach walk but many activities designed to cater more widely for the interests of students. These include fishing, snooker, ten-pin bowling, movies, mini golf, indoor soccer and beach play.
St Michael's College prides itself on both the participation levels of its students and the success of fundraising on this special day, raising approximately $50,000 yearly.
In recent years, the monies collected have been directed towards Lasallian projects throughout the Asia-Pacific region providing children in need with an opportunity for a better future and hence we have supported projects such as:
the Children Youth Centre, Ponta Leste in Baucau, East Timor
the Hohola Youth Development Centre
six schools in Pakistan as part of our Twinning Commitment for 2016-2017
a number of other secondary schools in and around Port Moresby
Funds will be directed to priority projects by the Lasallian Foundation (www.lasallianfoundation.org) as part of the Brothers' ongoing and increased commitment to supporting the work of Lasallian educators working with the poor and disadvantaged throughout the world.
Some funds will also be allocated directly to both local and national Catholic charities to help those most in need.
