Opening of the Sr Berenice Gallery and the Faces of Diversity Exhibition at Holy Spirit

Recently Holy Spirit Catholic College Lakemba had cause for a double celebration with the official opening of the Sr Berenice Gallery and the Faces of Diversity Exhibition in the Sr Berenice Gallery.

I would be surprised if any member of the Holy Spirit Catholic College community had not encountered the wonderful Sr Berenice.  Officially the  parent liaison officer, unofficially the resident saint who cares for the parents, students and staff alike.  Our ongoing connection to the Sisters of Saint Joseph who have been living and ministering to the community in Lakemba for over 60 years.  At the end of this year, Sr Berenice has advised that she will be finishing her 21 years of ministry in the Holy Spirit community.  As recognition of her outstanding service to the community the College Executive decided that the new gallery be named in her honour.  This gallery will provide a dedicated space where students from a range of classes will be able to exhibit their works and share their talents throughout the years ahead.

It was fitting that this should coincide with the opening of the Faces of Diversity Exhibition.  This was the culmination of a partnership with the Sydney Opera House, the Creative and Performing Arts teachers and the Year 10 Visual Arts and Music students.  Together they devised a project interviewing a range of people from the community, from a variety of backgrounds, who have made significant contributions in their field.  Following the interviews, the students created representational portraits of the community members whilst the music students composed pieces of music which complemented the portraits.  Of course one of the subjects for the project was Sr Berenice.  The evening was a great celebration of the diversity in our community and the outstanding talents of the students at the College.

As a whole community, we will formally farewell Sr Berenice at our end of year Mass on Friday, 13 December at 10.30am in the College Hall.  Parents and past students are very welcome to join us on this occasion.
