Q & A with Br David Hawke

The inaugural Young Lasallians evening with Brother David Hawke, was a boisterous and energetic affair held at St James College, Melbourne on Monday, March 20.

The Q & A style format, addressed some key issues and captivated a diverse audience of teachers, students and Brothers from across four Lasallian communities; St James, St John's, De La Salle and St Bede's Colleges in Melbourne. Hosted by Principal Stephen Pooley, pizza and nibbles kicked off some in-depth discussion and provided a platform for new connections to form and familiar ones to be strengthened.

St Bede's Deputy Principal, Ria Green remarked; "there was a wonderful energy in the room and to see the connection and solidarity between our schools is truly positive and encouraging."

Br. David Hawke initiated conversation on present-day matters, highlighting the Federal Government's declaration on Multiculturalism in Australia and how it applies to the culturally diverse landscape of Lasallian Melbourne schools. He delved into the Lasallian values of faith, service and community along with matters of self-care and how Netflix had played a significant part in his own self-care and recreation plan.

"My interactions and experiences with young Lasallians [such as tonight] offers me the opportunity to keep in touch with youth, revitalising and energising my engagement in the mission," said Br David Hawke.

St Bede's Vice Captain, Lucas Barrett also shared his thoughts about the Q&A.

"It was encouraging to hear someone in Br. David's position offering positive praise and encouragement about this young generation. He was also grateful for their individual contributions to an insightful conversation. Br David provided a positive view, when we only often hear negative perceptions about youth today," said Lucas Barrett.

This was the first of four Young Lasallian evenings currently on pilot across Sydney and Melbourne 2017.
