Oakhill raise over $50,000 for Lasallians in PNG

Oakhill's Mission Action Day was back this year bigger and better than ever. Staff and students donned their favourite superhero costumes, embraced their sense of fun and made our day a huge success.

The day began with the whole College coming together for some poignant reflections on the purpose of MAD - to raise money for the Breakfast Club in Papua New Guinea, led by La Salle and Mission@Oakhill staff, with some music and practice time for the teacher vs student dance-off. Students and staff then headed outside to immerse themselves in the day - rides, disco, nerf fun, food trucks, sports, dunk a Dean, pool obstacle course, bands and more. Early in the afternoon the teacher vs student football game was well attended, followed by Guest Speaker - Br Garry Coyte fsc, and then the long awaited teacher vs student dance-off, in which the crowd's cheering decided that the winner was the students!

MAD helped raise $50,000. The money raised will greatly assist the Breakfast Club in Papua New Guinea in building a new kitchen and help many students have a meal each day.

For those who may not be aware, Oakhill is a proud supporter of the Breakfast Club which was established in 2010 and provides a wholesome meal for about 200 students who otherwise begin the day without having had anything to eat, due to poverty or having to leave home early to reach school before class. The Breakfast Club project is ongoing and relies on the support of donors for funding to purchase provisions from the local markets. The Breakfast Club meals are served three mornings a week, providing students with food for a productive day and giving students an incentive to come to school to further their education to undertake a trade career.

You can read their plight below:

La Salle Technical Secondary School at Hohola will undergo significant changes and expansion in the coming years. The roll is expected to rise from 200 students to 1,100 students with Grade 11 and 12 classes introduced.

Oakhill College has been a loyal and generous supporter of the Breakfast Club program at Hohola for many years. The current facilities for the Breakfast Club are inadequate, and the increased roll is only going to exacerbate the problem. The proposal is to build a separate facility for the Breakfast Club which can also be used as a function and meeting centre.

Br Antony, the Principal at Hohola, is in the process of obtaining building costs and plans. The cost of the facility is estimated to be over AUD $70,000, and any funding that Oakhill College can contribute towards the overall cost would be much appreciated. Hopefully, Br Antony will be in a position to provide some pictures, plans and project outlines shortly that can be used in the school’s Mission Action Day promotion.
