A Milestone in Service: Merv McCormack Becomes an Affiliated Member of the Lasallian Institute

On 26 September 2024, an affiliation ceremony was held at the Lasallian Provincial Office in Sydney, marking a significant milestone in the journey of Mr Merv McCormack. The atmosphere was filled with celebration and camaraderie as the community came together to honour his commitment and dedication to the Lasallian mission, officially conferring his affiliation with the Institute.

The recognition of affiliation is granted to long-time committed Lasallian partners who have actively participated in and supported the mission and spirituality of the Brothers. This honour is typically reserved for individuals who have demonstrated their capacity, solidarity, and partnership with the Lasallian mission over many years. After more than 30 years of exemplary service, it was recommended that Mr McCormack be conferred this affiliation.

Merv’s commitment to Catholic education spans over 45 years, culminating in his role as the Executive Director of the Lasallian Mission Services for the District of Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Papua New Guinea (ANZPPNG). He began his teaching career in 1974 at Patrician Brothers’ College, Fairfield, specialising in Religious Education, English, and History. His leadership roles at St Patrick’s College, Strathfield, and later as Principal of Casimir Catholic College, Marrickville, showcased his dedication to enhancing educational outcomes and supporting the spiritual and professional development of both students and staff.

In 2015, Merv was appointed Executive Director of Lasallian Mission Services, where he dedicated himself to improving educational outcomes for the poor and marginalised while promoting Lasallian spirituality throughout the schools he encountered. His leadership in the Lasallian Mission Services team and involvement in Sector Mission Councils further contributed to the growth of spirituality formation programmes across ANZPPNG.

Brother John Cantwell, in his speech, praised Merv’s character and contributions, stating, “I was delighted at Merv’s appointment. I already knew that he was a gentleman both wise and discerning.” He recounted his first meeting with Merv, highlighting his thoughtful hospitality: “Merv offered me tea, coffee or scotch.” Brother John further noted, “Having encountered quite a range of Christian Brothers and De La Salle Brothers…Merv had no illusions about our frailty and failures,” yet he always spoke with “humour and affection” about those he worked with.

In the application to the District Council, Brother Garry Coyte reflected on Merv's leadership, noting, “Merv has always been supportive of Principals... His consultative approach and sensitivity to cultural norms have made him a respected leader in educational matters in both Pakistan and Papua New Guinea.”

Sir Brother Patrick Lynch also shared his support for Merv, stating, “I am honoured to submit a recommendation seeking to have letters of Affiliation bestowed on Mervyn McCormack…During his time as the Executive Director of Lasallian Mission Services, he visited several New Zealand Sector Council meetings, where he provided both encouragement and guidance, which was well received.” He further remarked on Merv’s qualities, saying, “In my view, Merv has demonstrated that he is a very compelling candidate to be considered for an affiliation honour.”

The ceremony was attended by members of the District Council and various Brothers and partners, all coming together to honour Merv's contributions. Brother John remarked on Merv’s ability to balance firmness with gentleness, stating, “Merv was always good at being gently firm, and cheerfully dignified.” He emphasised Merv's unwavering commitment to the education and well-being of young people, stating, “Above all, he conveyed a vigorous commitment to our fundamental ministry.”

Letters of recommendation for Merv’s affiliation were thoroughly reviewed and supported by the District Council, reflecting the high regard in which he is held. With 106 affiliated members in the ANZPPNG District, Merv's formal recognition as an Affiliated Member of the Institute is a testament to his lifelong commitment to our mission.

As we celebrate Merv’s affiliation, let us be inspired by his example and continue to foster the Lasallian spirit in our own lives. Together, we can further our mission of faith, service, and community, making a positive impact on those we serve.
