The Expanding Reach of the Lasallian Family in PNG

In the diverse landscapes of Papua New Guinea, from the hustle of Port Moresby to the highlands of Mount Hagen, the Lasallian Family in PNG continues a mission that began in 1946. What started with the arrival of the De La Salle Brothers has grown into an expansive community of educational excellence and Christian values. Today, this dedicated community of Brothers and Lasallian Partners stands united in their mission to provide quality human and Christian education to young people, with a special focus on those at society's margins.

The Lasallian story in Papua New Guinea is one of remarkable dedication and growth. Since their arrival in 1946, the De La Salle Brothers have been at the forefront of educational innovation, particularly in serving underprivileged communities. Their work has evolved from traditional secondary education to encompass technical colleges, teachers' training institutions, and welfare initiatives.

A network of dedicated partners, teachers, and educational leaders, the Lasallian Family extends across seventeen regions in Papua New Guinea. While only four De La Salle Brothers currently serve in the country, concentrated in Hohola (Port Moresby) and Mt Hagen, the mission thrives through the commitment of hundreds of Lasallian Partners who carry forward the educational work throughout Aitape, Buka, East New Britain, Eastern Highlands, East Sepik, Jiwaka, Kiunga, Madang, Milne Bay, National Capital District (NCD), Oro, Simbu, Southern Highlands, Wabag, Western Highlands Province, West New Britain, and Vanimo. This geographical spread demonstrates the Family's commitment to reaching communities throughout the nation.

In PNG, the Lasallian Family is an integral part of the De La Salle District of Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan & Papua New Guinea (ANZPPNG). This community brings together religious and lay members who share a common vision of education that emphasises:

  • Excellence in all dimensions

  • Inclusive and contemporary teaching practices

  • Particular concern for the poor and marginalised

  • Strong community spirit

  • Child protection and professional standards

  • Commitment to Lasallian educational philosophy and spirituality

As the Lasallian mission in PNG continues to evolve, 2025 promises to be a significant year with the anticipated arrival of two new De La Salle Brothers. This development comes in response to local calls for increased Brothers' presence and will complement the current Brothers serving in Hohola and Mount Hagen. Their arrival will strengthen the existing mission and support the growing network of Lasallian educators across the country.

As the community prepares for these new arrivals, it also acknowledges the dedication of Grace Wrakia, who will conclude her service as National Family Coordinator at the end of 2024.

As the Lasallian Family in Papua New Guinea continues to grow and evolve, it remains steadfast in its commitment to providing quality education to young people, especially those in marginalised communities. Through its extensive network of schools, colleges, and community presence, the Lasallian mission continues to touch lives and shape futures across this diverse nation, embodying the vision of St John Baptist de La Salle in the unique context of Papua New Guinea.
