Lasallian Compass “One of the best P.D. days I have done”

Lasallian Mission Services recently held the “Our Lasallian Compass” program to help orient staff and students new to the Lasallian mission.

In Adelaide attendees took an in-depth look into the story, spirituality and innovative pedagogy of Lasallian education and ministry and its application to the contemporary Catholic school and the work of yourtown. Those who attended were invited to contribute their evaluation of the event.

“(It was a) great opportunity to interact with work colleagues that you don’t usually spend time with,” said one attendee at the event at St. Michael’s College. “I enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the De La Salle origin story and the chance to question and evaluate how the Lasallian values translate into the modern school environment.”

Drawing upon the shared wisdom and experience of the participants, the program explored the Lasallian educational mission as a mission of the Church. It presented insights into the charism of our founder, St John Baptist de La Salle.

Philippe Dulawan, Associate Director Formation for Mission and Br John Cantwell FSC, Director Emeritus Formation for Mission, led the sessions aimed at Lasallian educators, volunteers and young Lasallians.

Br John has served as a De La Salle Brother for more than 50 years, having entered the mission in 1973. Throughout his career, he has served as a teacher, principal, lecturer and dean of students, as well as a religious education coordinator for students and adults.

Meanwhile, Philippe’s role focuses on the human and Christian flourishing of the people he works with, particularly the students in the Lasallian school network. Whether at work or in broader life, Phil aspires to create spaces that feel like home, where others can find safety, flourishing and empowerment to live their best selves.

Several attendees said the presenters were enthusiastic and helpful as they led the group through the information.

One attendee said they thoroughly enjoyed the day, which had a good mix of lecture vs. participant participation. Another said the event helped provide them with a better understanding of the values held by the Lasallian mission and made them feel like they were living and implementing the values already.

“It was an extremely worthwhile and interactive workshop that allowed us to really build connections with others,” one attendee wrote in a post-event evaluation. “The way the information was presented was clear, concise and not ‘too heavy.’ It provided me with a clearer understanding of Lasallian values and the history behind them.”

Another reviewer wrote that the event was “Honestly one of the best P.D. days I have done. Great to mingle and learn through good convo and activities. Great day!”

Lasallian Mission Services believes in empowering young people to learn, grow and reach their potential. They provide high-quality personal and professional development to those who work with and support young people. This process of development is called Formation for Mission. They also empower a network of young adults and experienced educators to craft Formation for Mission programs and experiences that complement what already happens in Lasallian ministries and empower young Lasallians to lead the way into the future.

Another event will be held on 14th May in Sydney. Can’t make it? Our Lasallian Compass events may also be held by request at a cost of $150. To book, click here.
