Revisiting Memories and Celebrating Success: De La Salle College Kingsgrove Class of '64 60th Year Reunion

Forty-five De La Salle College Kingsgrove Old Boys and five of their former teachers recently enjoyed a 60th year Class Reunion in Sydney.

Organised by Old Boy Graham Blewitt AM, a retired NSW Magistrate and former Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, (ICTY), the reunion was a wonderful celebration.

Four of the teachers who attended are or were De La Salle Brothers: Bede Mackrell; Max Sculley; Vin Underwood; John Dowd; along with lay teacher John Nicholson, a now retired District Court Judge.  Br Bill Good sent apologies for his inability to attend.

It was clear that although 60 years had passed since those schoolboy days, the friendships had not faded. Reminiscences of days of old were revisited, and stories from intervening years were shared in palpably warm friendships.  A recurring theme was the collective sense of gratitude for the quality education received all those years ago. Although no longer serving the education of young men on the site, DLS Kingsgrove instilled in its students a sense of Faith, Service and Community which has been lived out in the accomplishments of its esteemed Old Boys, with many experiencing significant successes in their respective careers, including Bryan Brown and Graham Blewitt to name but two.

The accompanying photos provide a sense of this special gathering which was so popular that it was decided to hold another reunion in two years’ time.

An invitation will be sent to the men of the Class of ’64 to attend the launch of the De La Salle Community Association Network (DLS-CAN)  at Doltone House (Jones bay Wharf) on 14 June 2024.  See link here. (Lasallians may be interested in a fascinating book written by Graham. Following his distinguished legal career, Graham has written a book JUSTICE  and WAR CRIMES: DOCUMENTING THE FIRST TEN YEARS OF THE ICTY  a  fascinating account of the UN’s International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia where he served as Deputy Chief Prosecutor).
