Leaving as family

The Lasallian Student Leadership Seminar was a five-day camp where student leaders from Lasallian schools across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea gathered at the Collaroy Centre to engage in an experience that empowered them to be the best Lasallian leaders they could be. Walking into this short gathering, I was unsure as to my expectations. But by the end of it, the admirable student leaders answered that question for me. It was to inspire all members of the camp to live out the Lasallian spirit within their school community.

At the beginning of the week, 50 students began their journey at De La Salle College Ashfield. Although the nerves were evident, we knew instantly we had a special group of leaders on our hands. We witnessed the nerves ease through icebreakers and fun activities which helped the students begin to open up. This vulnerability from the students allowed them to establish relationships with fellow leaders and take away maximum content from the beneficial sessions run throughout the week. Seeing the students create lifelong memories at the beach, on the AFL field or even during the talent show was truly special.

For me, the most eye-opening experience was our final goodbyes. Although it was sad to see everyone venture onto their own unique paths, seeing students taking pictures with each other and exchanging contact details was rewarding. Students who entered as strangers and were scared to converse with students from other schools left with lifelong friends and memories that would be with them forever. I’m forever grateful that I could play a part in this extraordinary group of students and wish them the very best for their future.
