La Salle Technical School Shines at Global Youth Film Festival

La Salle Technical Secondary School, Hohola, Papua New Guinea, recently achieved a remarkable milestone at the prestigious Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival (DBGYFF), marking an important moment for both the school and the wider community. The event, known for showcasing outstanding creativity from youth filmmakers worldwide, brought together an impressive array of films, but one production from La Salle stood out among the best.

A short film directed by Miss Serah David and Mr Murray Misha from the school’s Media Education Group was selected as one of the final 120 films in the festival’s Global Best 2-Minute Film Category. Even more impressive was the film’s strong performance, securing 3rd place in this highly competitive category, making it the only film from Papua New Guinea to reach the final selection.

The film, titled I Am the Change, addresses pressing social issues within Papua New Guinea, including poverty, peer pressure, the challenges faced by single parents, limited opportunities, and the impact of these factors on youth. At the heart of the film is a powerful message about making choices in the face of adversity—whether to succumb to negative influences or to pursue one’s dreams despite the odds. Through this poignant narrative, I Am the Change also emphasises the transformative role of education and the strength found in family bonds.

The recognition of this film at the DBGYFF is a testament to the vision and commitment of La Salle Technical Secondary School’s Media Education Group, which continues to inspire students and staff alike to engage in creative expression and critical thinking. By participating in such a globally recognised event, the school not only provided its students with a unique platform to showcase their talents but also encouraged collaboration with other schools and filmmakers from around the world.

The success of I Am the Change also highlights the dedication of both students and teachers, whose hard work and passion for storytelling came to life on the global stage. Their achievement serves as a source of pride and motivation for the entire La Salle community.

As La Salle Technical Secondary School, Hohola, celebrates this prestigious achievement, the Media Education Group looks ahead with excitement, eager to continue nurturing the next generation of filmmakers. By encouraging students to use their creative voices to address important societal issues, they hope to inspire young people to share their unique stories and make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

This recognition at the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival is not only a proud moment for La Salle Technical Secondary School but also a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations of aspiring filmmakers in Papua New Guinea and around the world.
