De La Salle Brother embarks on a Pilgrimage of Solidarity and Support

Former Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University, Br. Peter Bray, FSC, has embarked on a profound journey, both physical and symbolic. Concluding his tenure at Bethlehem University in December 2023, Br. Peter has since been engaged in a sabbatical programme in San Antonio, Texas. However, his heart and mind have remained tethered to the plight of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Throughout his time in San Antonio, Br. Peter found himself deeply troubled by the ongoing hardships faced by Palestinians. Feeling a sense of helplessness in the face of such adversity, he sought a tangible way to express solidarity and support. Thus, he resolved to embark on a pilgrimage along the El Camino de Santiago in Spain, a journey spanning from May 23 to June 27, 2024.

This pilgrimage, steeped in history and faith, serves as a platform for Br. Peter to draw attention to the struggles of the Palestinian people and to rally support for the students of Bethlehem University. With a funding gap of over $1 million confronting the university, Br. Peter's walk symbolises a beacon of hope amidst challenging times.

As Br. Peter traverses the 730 kilometres of the Camino, he estimates taking between 1.2 and 1.3 million steps. Each step is imbued with purpose, representing a stand for justice, equality, and support for Palestinian youth. While financial contributions are welcomed, Br. Peter emphasises the power of collective action, urging individuals to reflect on what they can do, wherever they may be.

Through this pilgrimage, Br. Peter seeks to alleviate the financial burdens faced by students at Bethlehem University, many of whom hail from families affected by the downturn in the hospitality industry and restricted access to employment opportunities. His journey, both arduous and meaningful, serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unwavering commitment to fostering positive change.

As Br. Peter embarks on this transformative odyssey, he calls upon supporters to join him in spirit, prayer and solidarity. Contributions made to sponsor his journey will directly benefit Bethlehem University, ensuring that young Palestinians have access to quality education and a brighter future.

As the pilgrimage unfolds, Br. Peter remains steadfast in his mission, driven by a profound sense of compassion and conviction. With each step, he marches closer to his goal of advocating for peace, justice, and the empowerment of Palestinian youth. Let us stand together in support of Br. Peter 's noble endeavour, keeping him in our thoughts and prayers as he continues his journey of solidarity and hope.
